Private Water Regulations
Private Water Regulations 2009
In January 2010, the Private Water Supplies Regulations 1991 were replaced with new Regulations. A supply is deamed private if it is not from the public water supply. This may be from a river, stream, lake etc. The regulations require local authorites to carry out a risk assessment of all Private Water Supplies by January 2015.
The frequency and type of monitoring of small supplies (<10 cubic meters/day) is determined through the risk assessment. Larger supplies (>10 cubic meters/day) and those to commercial and public premises will require checks and monitoring from the first year. What is to be monitored for is set out in the Regulations.
These Regulations apply in relation to private supplies of water intended for human consumption; and for these purposes “water intended for human consumption” means: (a) all water either in its original state or after treatment, intended for drinking, cooking, food preparation or other domestic purposes, regardless of its origin and whether it is supplied from a distribution network, from a tanker, or in bottles or containers. (b) all water used in any food-production undertaking for the manufacture, processing, preservation or marketing of products or substances intended for human consumption.
